The Panther Pantry helps families who don't have much food with donations. They give out food and other items many times a year at the high school. All the schools in the district participate, but Roundtown does some special things for the Panther Pantry.
- Mrs. Peckmann organized a holiday meal drive for all of second and third grade to help families have a nice holiday meal. They collected anything that went with turkey, including stuffing, vegetables, gravy, cranberry sauce, and desserts. They got the idea because they got a donation of one hundred turkeys from the York County Food Bank and they didn't want to give just turkeys but provide the whole dinner. They collected donations in November and gave them out in December.
- Miss Zeger's students collected cereal, marshmallows, M&M's and cheese balls. They picked snacks without gluten or nuts so everyone could eat it, even those with food allergies. They combined giving with learning by measuring the ingredients when they made the bags. Each student made 7 bags and decorated the bags with a snowman.
- The Panther Pantry doesn't always give away just food. Mrs. Plymire's and Mrs. Petry's classes did a toy collection because some kids don't have toys and need help with their life. They do it around Christmas because that's when kids mostly want to get toys. Once the toys come in they sort them. They will do the toy drive again in March and April.
- The Panther Pantry also likes to have some fun! Mrs. Cooley's class organized a treat that everybody would like. They made packs of snowman soup that contained Hershey kisses, candy canes, hot chocolate and marshmallows. Then they decorated the bags with snowmen. Other kindergarten classes helped.
Volunteering Through the United Way

On January 30, Mr. Reynolds came into Mrs. Mummert's class and talked about the United Way and why it's important. The United Way is a group where people help charities and organizations get volunteers. The United Way helps plan and set up events. Mr. Reynolds' job is to "connect the dots" and match needs with volunteers.
Caitlin from Mrs. Mummert's class told us about what she learned from Mr. Reynolds and said, "It is good to volunteer because it helps the people in our community and makes our city, state and country a better place." Andrew also said, "Volunteering helps the world in so many different ways." Volunteering is like "signing up." Caitlin added, "You don't get paid, but you volunteer because it's the right thing to do." The United Way is a respected organization and when you hear of others volunteering it makes you want to do it.
You can get involved in so many places. The SPCA, local parks, or schools, just to name a few. Maybe you will get involved in volunteering somewhere someday. It makes you feel proud to volunteer!

Second Grade Swimming Lessons

Did you know that some of our learners go to the pool to learn during our school day? The second graders at Roundtown go swimming at the high school pool for a short time everyday for two weeks to learn to swim. In the beginning, they start in the shallow end then they go to the deep end. They learn the freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly stroke. Kylie and TJ think the backstroke is the hardest because when you're going backwards you can't see the other swimmers coming. At each session, they practice the strokes they already know then add new strokes.
Second graders learn to swim so they can be safe in the water. Kamryn told us that they wear life jackets when they go in the deep end or in the canoes. TJ said, "If you fall off a boat you can swim to safety" and Kylie said, "you can protect yourself in many situations."
Besides learning, swimming is actually fun! TJ likes to jump off the diving blocks. Dylan also said he likes to jump in the deep end.
All this talk about swimming makes us excited for summer and going to our pools outside to swim!

Do you know about Roundtown PROUD? Roundtown PROUD is our motto and it is an acronym for many words that tell how students act at Roundtown.
P is for Polite
R is for Responsible
O is for Outstanding
U is for Understanding
D is for Dependable
We even have a theme song that our music teacher, Mrs. Graves, wrote about being Roundtown PROUD!
One big part of being Roundtown PROUD is the green circle. The green circle is all about caring, sharing and respect. We interviewed three students who are making a project about the green circle. Hristos, Carter and Ryann created a poster to put in front of the gym for all the students and visitors to see. The students put two hearts in the middle to show their family and people they care about. On the outside, it is a green circle that has names of their friends, teachers and classmates. It reminds us to include others in our green circle. Hristos said, "It makes me want to come to school when students are Roundtown PROUD."
Now, do you know what Roundtown PROUD means? We are happy to be part of a school that is Roundtown PROUD.

Roundtown is Special

Today we talked to people about why Roundtown is special. One of our students, Jacob, thinks it is fun to learn here. Parker likes Roundtown because we have privileges like talking in the cafeteria. Officer Wise, who was walking through our school, said Roundtown is special because it is a safe and secure building. Mrs. Harper, our assistant principal, said the boys and girls and the families are what make Roundtown special. We also had the chance to talk with a few of our parents during a PTO meeting to hear what they think. Mrs. Bucks and Mrs. Shearer said there are great teachers at Roundtown. Mrs. Berkstressor likes coming to Roundtown because everyone is so kind to each other and is Roundtown PROUD. We got to talk to a lot of people and everyone thinks Roundtown is special!
Roundtown friends tell the Ripples why this school is so special.
